It was 45 years ago, on April 14, 1970 those three astronauts, namely: Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise were on their way to the Moon, as members of the Apollo 13 mission. At more than 300,000 km from Earth, one of their two oxygen tanks exploded, leaving them with no choice but to abort their mission and find their way back home through an epic journey of survival, a story of ingenuity and team work.
The total absence of light that can be experienced merely in space was almost certainly the source of inspiration for Omega when they’ve designed the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon. I still remember hearing Chris Hadfield giving an interview to CBC after his return from his space mission and one thing that he described that truly moved my imagination was the blackness of space, a black we can’t knowledge here on Earth.
This week at Baselworld, four new Omega speedmaster is released, including Black Black, Sedna Black, Pitch Black and Vintage Black. All these belong to the popular Speedmaster Moonwatch Dark Side of the Moon collection.
The Sedna Black (Ref. 311.63.44.51.06.001) is the consequence of the combination of Omega’s ceramic technology and their popular rose gold alloy, called Sedna gold.
With the omega Black (Ref. 311.92.44.51.01.005), Omega has turned off the lights entirely, opting for a refined and brushed black ceramic case, a matt black ceramic dial and a black ceramic clasp on a black coated nylon fabric strap. Well-made and with great detail, this watch is definitely worth the money and it is probably one of the best looking watches out there. The sub-dials at 3 and 9 o’clock are matt black and the black ceramic bezel has a black lacquered tachymeter scale as well.
The 42 mm stainless steel timepiece is presented on a black coated nylon fabric strap with white stitching and a foldover clasp. The Speedmaster Apollo 13 Silver Snoopy Award will be produced in an edition limited to 1,970 pieces. The blue dial is really gorgeous. A very elegant design I like, three hand with luminous hour and minute hands, second hand features a shooting star end, other Mark series replica watches do not have this feature. The big triangle at 12 o’clock is the icon of IWC Mark series. White markers on blue background make the dial highly readable. A fan-shaped date window at 3 o’clock has black date font in white background, the left white triangle is pointing at current date. Although I’m quite sure that the engraving wasn’t done by hand, the end result is impressing. Ultimately, it’s part of the whole vintage charm that this timepiece oozes. This Radiomir Firenze clearly is one of the coolest watches out there, on par with the black Panerai Ceramica replica I reviewed here, which is perhaps the coolest Panerai Luminor replica out there.
Just like many don’t know how to spot a fake Panerai Luminor because most replicas do a great job at cloning every detail right, I think is just as hard as being called out with a fake with this baby. And the Japanese movement that powers this baby is no different. It keeps perfect time and the power reserve lasts easily over a day. Not many get to see one, as opposed to your average Panerai Luminor Marina replica which again, not easy to spot as a fake if you don’t know exactly where to look at.
Ultimately, I have no reason not to be satisfied. Awesome looking case, great feeling leather strap and one of the best movements’ automatic movements I’ve seen lately. Even if you’re not the greatest admirer of the brand, the replica Radiomir 3 Days Acciaio is perhaps the best place to start because at just 42mm, it sits well on any kind of wrist. I really wanted to love it, maybe we would grow to love each other and appreciate each other’s company. But, no, it just didn’t happen.
During a trip to Tokyo a couple of years ago I was in a meeting with a distinguished Japanese gentleman, impeccably clad and wearing the most gorgeous Yohei Fukuda bespoke shoes. But since I’m not a fan of modern Rolex (and somewhat of a cheapo) I naturally didn’t want to pay full price. After having put my amazing negotiation skills to work and obtaining a generous zero percent discount, I walked out with Reference 216570 including box and papers. Beneath his French cuffs he appeared to be sporting a modern luxury replica Rolex Explorer II for sale.
The watch nerd that I am, I rarely immediately wear my new watches; I like to put them aside for a few days and let the anticipation grow. My guardian angel, once again proving that he or she is watching over me full time, came to the rescue as just around the corner I found a second-hand store that had . . . wait for it . . . an Explorer II in stock. When the day finally came that it was time to wear my new Rolex, I took it out of the box, read the instruction manual (I couldn’t figure out how to set the orange hand) and proudly put it on my wrist. Emails were sent, contacts made, and the watch was sent for a full makeover that would take two months.
I spoke to my buddy, Chris, about this. He is a collector and watch fanatic and takes his watches very seriously. He is often left shaking his head in disbelief when I talk to him about my different watch projects, but this time his reply was, “I don’t consider the Explorer II an iconic Rolex like a Submariner or a Daytona, so why not?”Anyway, to make a long story short, I collected quotes from different companies who could pimp my Rolex, and each was even more ridiculously expensive than the other.
Each quote I got almost doubled in price, but I was ready to make the sacrifice; I was not going to abandon my Explorer II without a fight. Yes, I seem to be the guy who needs approval from his peers to go ahead with a project . . . sigh . . . and there I was thinking I was a free spirit!
There was no way I was going to go under with regrets, but that’s where my guardian angel intervened a second time: another collector friend of mine told me of a discreet watch shop in Switzerland (names and places have been changed to protect the innocent) who could do the pimping I needed. Needless to say, this gentleman captivated me so that basically the first thing I did once the meeting over was look for a Rolex dealer.

I’m not a fan of modern Rolex other than the Explorer II Reference 216570 with the main reason being is that it looks so much like the vintage 1655 “Freccione” with its flamboyant orange second time zone hand, a collector’s classic dream.
